No 166 Inquiry 877 Date 2019/04/23

□ The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (MCST, minister Do Jong-hwan) and the Korean Foundation for International Cultural Exchange (KOFICE, president Kim Yong-rak) published the Hallyu White Paper, 2018, a comprehensive compilation of information on Hallyu.

□ The Hallyu White Paper is an annual publication first published in 2008 as A Series on Hallyu. It was subsequently renamed Hallyu White Paper from 2013 to 2015, Hallyu Makers in 2016, and again as the Hallyu White Paper from 2017. Experts in cultural content-related organizations such as the Korea Creative Content Agency, the Korean Film Council, and the Korean Broadcast Advertising Corporation, as well as those in various cultural sectors such as chef and food columnist Jang Jun-woo and KL Management President Joseph Lee, have contributed as authors.

□ The Hallyu White Paper is composed of three sections: Part 1: Introduction to Hallyu, Part 2: Hallyu Achievements in 2018 and Prospects by Sector, Part 3: Supplement (related policies and dissertations). Parts 1 and 2 encapsulate trends in seven major pop culture content categories—TV programs, films, music, performances, games, animation, and publications—and export trends in four major customer goods and service industries—fashion, cosmetic, food, and tourism—while also interpreting the results of the 2019 Overseas Hallyu Survey, a survey of 7,500 consumers in 16 countries, through infographics of items such as “images immediately associated with Korea,” “the most popular Hallyu content,” and “factors that contribute to the popularity of Hallyu content.”

□ Part 3 compiles bibliographical information on 334 dissertations on Hallyu submitted from 2015 to 2018 spanning the fields of social science, the humanities, arts and physics, and interdisciplinary sciences. By creating a list of theses, authors, and issuers, this section enables one to save time and focus one’s energy on processing and managing information resources. This section also provides useful information on the public sector such as major Hallyu-related policy trends and the status of related ministries and institutions.

□ The Hallyu White Paper, 2018 will be distributed with priority going to central administrative agencies, local governments, and organizations and institutions in the cultural industry. It will enhance a general understanding of Hallyu industries and consumer goods and serve as a guide for enterprises in establishing strategies for the proliferation of Hallyu, in addition to being an important source of material for academic research.

□ The Hallyu White Paper, 2018 can be downloaded from the Hallyu Reports tab of the KOFICE website (www.kofice.or.kr) and will also be available for purchase at the government publication section of the Kyobo Book Centre beginning on May 1.
