Title KOFICE Publishes 2017 Study on Ripple Effects of Hallyu

□ The Korean Foundation for International Cultural Exchange (KOFICE) has published the 2017
Study on Ripple Effects of Hallyu by compiling the results of research carried out with its support. The
report offers in-depth analysis of the present status of Hallyu and its tasks through both quantitative
and qualitative study under the titles of “Economic Effect of Hallyu,” “Effect of PyeongChang Winter
Olympic Games on Hallyu,” and a “Study on the Hindrances in Hallyu Dissemination.”


□ The study on economic effects of Hallyu measures the effect of Hallyu in such numerical forms as
the Hallyu Index, direct and indirect effects on exports, and effects on national economy, on the basis
of a survey of 7,800 people with Hallyu experiences in 16 countries and utilizing export materials of
14 industrial fields. The Hallyu Index shows the level and direction of Hallyu dissemination by
country. According to the index, most countries are gathered in the middle stage of Hallyu growth.
When compared to a similar survey in 2016, Thailand and Indonesia, which were in the popularizing
stage, have fallen to the dissemination stage, while the United States, France, Australia, and South
Africa, all the countries in the declining stage except Japan, rose to the middle growth stage.


□ From an analysis of Hallyu’s effects on exports and the national economy as reflected in six cultural
content-related industries and eight consumer goods and tourism industries, the study concludes that
Hallyu brought forth an export increase of 6.9 percent or approximately USD 8.2 billion as of 2017.
Cultural content led the export increase by recording 18.7 percent growth, registering USD 3.82
billion in exports, in sharp contrast to consumer goods and tourism which dropped to USD 4.4 billion,
down 1.6 percent from the previous year. Tourism exports used to play a key role in Hallyuencouraged
business, but decreased by 22 percent to USD 1.1 billion. All in all, Hallyu-created
production was valued at KRW 17.8014 trillion, up 4 percent from the previous year. The Hallyu
effect on added value was worth KRW 6.9178 trillion won, or up 5.1 percent, and its effect on
employment was 128,262 new jobs, or up 2.5 percent from the previous year.
* The Change of Total Exports Caused by Hallyu: USD 6.92 billion in 2014, USD 7.11 billion in
2015, USD 7.69 billion in 2016, and USD 8.21 billion in 2017.


□ The effect of the PyeongChang Winter Olympic Games on Hallyu has been determined by
investigating the change of attitudes of some 2,000 Koreans and Americans. In summary, the mega
event created positive changes in Hallyu recognition, and these changes were stronger among Koreans
than Americans. The study on the hindrances in Hallyu dissemination looked into the Internet bulletin
boards of China and Japan, while analyzing social, political, cultural and economic differences
between Korea and other countries as exposed in the interviews with Hallyu experts in and outside of
Korea. The study reveals the ambivalent outcome caused by media on Hallyu dissemination and
suggests varied ways of removing the hindrances.


□ KOFICE President Kim Yongrak said, “It is not inevitable that crisis must occur on the other side of
Hallyu dissemination because of cultural differences and conflicts. I hope this report will contribute to
comprehensive understanding of Hallyu and establishing policies and corporate strategies.
