□ Emerging Indonesian fashion designers trained at the Young Creator Indonesia Fashion Institute
(YCIFI) will take part in the 2019 Jakarta Fashion Week, slated for October 22–26, for the second
consecutive year this fall. The YCIFI is co-operated by the Korean Foundation for International
Cultural Exchange (KOFICE) and the Bandung Institute of Technology and sponsored by the GKL
Foundation.
□ Jakarta Fashion Week is the most influential fashion event in Indonesia, the largest center of the
fashion industry in Southeast Asia where fashion designers, buyers, and consumers gather. It is called
the dream stage for Indonesian youths planning a career in fashion. YCIFI has set up an official
partnership with Jakarta Fashion Week and conducts a variety of programs to help its fashion talents
make inroads into the global market. YCIFI efforts include fashion shows, fashion booths, and the
Global Fashion Mentorship, a business workshop affiliated with the fashion week.
□ In the main event on October 26, six designers who graduated with outstanding achievement from
the YCIFI’s third, fourth, and fifth classes will show each of their collections during the Young
Creator by YCIFI program. YCIFI designers have emerged at the center of media attention as they
will adorn the finale of the grand fashion week by winning over the intense competition among
designers from fashion schools operated by varied cultural institutions in Britain, France, and Japan.
At the Jakarta Fashion Week Convention where more than 100 fashion brands will take part, YCIFI
will open a joint booth and a showroom, the largest in size among similar booths, for its 14
outstanding graduates to publicize their global brands and to support contract signing. Brands
launched by YCIFI designers who have already begun to be recognized in the Indonesian fashion
market are expected to harvest good results from the event. Notable lines include Youngwoong by
Bertha Puspita and Brilianto by Brilianto from YCIFI’s second class and Nu by Prasetyo Nugroho.
□ YCIFI will also conduct its regular program, the Global Fashion Mentorship for three days
beginning October 24 jointly with Jakarta Fashion Week. The mentorship program will feature as
mentors top Korean designers Kwon Mun-soo and Kang Yohan, whose brands are already popular in
Southeast Asian market, and Auguste Soesastro and Deden Siswanto both of who are leading
Indonesian high fashion designers. The mentors will also include fashion buyers and directors from
both countries who will provide practical wisdom on working in the fashion business and developing
the industry. The mentorship program will host a seminar of experts in varied fields on October 24;
one-to-one intensive mentoring by Korean and Indonesian mentors on October 25; and a public
lecture by Korean mentors on October 26.
□ YCIFI has grown into an incubator of fashion talents by graduating 80 designers within three years
since its establishment while serving as a networking platform for Korean and Indonesian fashion
professionals. It will become an institute affiliated with the Bandung Institute of Technology in
December, and beginning in 2019, it will be operated solely by Indonesian manpower and funding.
YCIFI will secure a self-supportive mentoring program by building a network of experts specializing
in practical business and employing the best curriculum and instructors in Indonesia. As the first
Korean-Indonesian professional institute focused on fashion and as a program aiming for social
service, YCIFI has greatly contributed to the development of the fashion culture industry in both
nations and to bilateral exchange in the field.
□ KOFICE President Kim Yongrak said, “YCIFI graduates are emerging as Indonesia’s leaders in
global fashion. It is the first example of successful social service achieved in the field of fashion
through the close cooperation among the private, public, and academic sectors of both countries. It
will make substantial contribution to the common growth of the fashion industries in both countries.”
