Wonder Girls’ Yeeun vs. The Musical Actress Yeeun: Challenge Is Fun

Yeeun of Wonder Girls stood alone onstage. Recognized as a singer-songwriter, Yeeun unexpectedly chose the musical stage. Although nervous about her first musical, she wore a bright smile and looked relaxed. Yeeun showed potential yet another time as Constance in “The Three Musketeers.”

Yeeun cut the tape as an actress on February 20 with her role as the heroine of “The Three Musketeers.” She is beginning to resemble the pretty and upright Constance, who is also the first love of D’Artagnan.

“I feel that I am becoming more and more like Constance. I am filled with a happy energy these days,” Yeeun said with a smile.

”The Three Musketeers” is set in 17th century France and follows the adventures of the chivalrous and ambitious D’Artagnan, and royal musketeers Athos, Aramis, and Porthos. Yeeun, who has always been interested in musicals, grabbed the opportunity at once.

“It is completely different from going onstage as a singer. A singer must express the song in 3–4 minutes, but in musicals, I have to control my emotions over a long time. Of course, the technical part of singing is also different, so I find it difficult to deliver my singing to the audience. But I am having fun.”

Yeeun picked improvisation and emotional spectrum as the biggest advantages of musicals. As a member of Wonder Girls, Yeeun never had big difficulties with the choreography, but on a musical stage, she has to respond quickly to the constantly changing instructions and other characters’ ad-libs. However, she says that unlike pop music that mainly focuses on love and breakup, the musical stage allows her to experience another era and various emotions of the characters.

“It does not flow like the script. Every stage is like a live stage. I don’t know how the story will unfold, so I am learning to improvise. I do not compare with other actors and actresses, but I am learning to enjoy the stage.”

Wonder Girls’ Yeeun and musical actress Yeeun are different, but both enjoy the stage. She says that she shares Constance’s optimism and innocence, as well as her sense of justice.

“I, too, cannot just walk by when I see someone in trouble, just as Constance helps D’Artagnan when he is beaten. I am not as brave as Constance when it comes to expressing love, but I think I’ve become brighter because of the musical.”
Yeeun did not forget to reassure Wonder Girls’ fans, who are worried that the group might break up.

“Some people are worried that Sunye’s marriage means that Wonder Girls will break up. But that’s not true. This is just a good opportunity for all the members to polish their potentials. Other members will soon appear in other genres, like TV dramas. I look forward to seeing what they can do.”

Yubin will appear in her first drama on OCN’s “The Virus,” while Sohee and Hyerim are also preparing to appear anew in other fields. Yeeun is also thinking of making a solo album that captures her musical creativity and talents.

“I am finally planning the solo album that I have only thought about. Of course, I want to fill it with my own songs. But I am going to concentrate on the musical first and then make specific plans. This year, all the members are going to give their best in their own fields. What about Wonder Girls? All five of us love the stage, so we will get together anytime.”
