Caption

Why is this movie causing such a stir?

Ji-young

What is it about this movie that’s got everybody talking?

Joon-ho

It’s about the unrest seething amongst the passengers of an overcrowded train.

Ji-young

After being inspired by a comic book, it took 8 years for the film to be realized.

Inspired by the French comic “Le Transperceneige” The movie took 7 years of planning and 3 years to produce

It had a budget of $41,000,000 US

Ji-young

Filmed on location in the Czech Republic, Snowpiercer had the best staff on offer and is on record as having had the biggest budget in Korean film history.

This global project brought together Korean and international staff

Ji-young

Did you have any problems in getting your ideas across?

Caption

Any communication problems?

Joon-ho

No, we had excellent interpreters, so there were no problems.

Caption

We had a lot of help from interpreters

Joon-ho

And films are made in the same way all over the world.

Caption

The filmmaking mechanism is the same everywhere The modesty of Bong Joon-ho

Joon-ho

Anyone who wants to can make a film just like this.

Kang-ho

You know there were only two Korean actors,

Caption

Song Kang-ho and Ko Ah-seong were the only Korean actors

Kang-ho

so I really didn’t say much at all.

Caption

I didn’t speak at all

Ji-young

Were there any other difficulties?

Joon-ho

Well, it was hard to adjust to the food.

Caption

Any differences with working in Korea?

Caption

The food was very different...

Joon-ho

Most of the actors and staff were British, American or Czech.

Caption   90% of the staff and cast were British, American or Czech...

Joon-ho

Czech food is really fatty, so when I came back to Korea one time, I weighed 109 kg.

Czech food is really fatty

Caption

Once, my weight ballooned up to 109 kg

Ji-young

Have you lost the weight again?

Joon-ho

I’m back down to 98 kg

I’m back down to 98 kg

Ji-young

I’d like to move on to Chris. Is this your first time in Korea?

Caption

It’s Chris Evans’ first time in Korea

Chris

It’s great. So far, so good. And it’s been great so far. I mean, it’s nice.

It’s nice to be in a place that’s so well-receiving of the art we’re all trying to make.

Ji-young

Now Chris, you’re famous for your sexy body and beautiful face, and there are a lot of people out there  who expect that from you, so I wonder if that’s what we’re going to see in this film?

Chris

Haha, I don’t know, unfortunately I don’t think so.

Chris

I’m wearing about 9 layers of ratty old clothing and a full beard, unfortunately I don’t think so.

Joon-ho

There’s just one scene where you can see him undressed.

A scoop from Director Bong Joon-ho

Ji-young

So you can see some skin?

Joon-ho

Yes, if you’re looking for it.

Ji-young

I’m going to give it my full attention.

Caption

The story takes place upon the train known as ‘Snowpiercer’, which rides in an endless loop around the frozen Earth There is a strict hierarchy aboard the train, and we see the struggles faced by the last surviving members of humanity

Ji-young

The story takes place on the train which is the home of the last surviving members of humanity.

The main plot deals with the revolt that breaks out amongst the down-trodden untouchables as a result of their total repression by the elite.

Joon-ho, is it true that you turned  Kang-ho into a sex symbol in your film?

Caption

Director Bong, have you made Kang-ho a sex-symbol?

Joon-ho

Well, it wasn’t really me that did it.

He’s just so naturally sexy, you see...

It wasn’t really me,

Joon-ho

If you see the poster, you’ll know what I mean

Kang-ho

They’ve photoshopped it, that’s not me!

Caption

???

Ji-young

Is it true that you asked for more scenes wiith you and Kang-ho?

Caption

Tilda Swinton requested more scenes with Kang-ho?

Tilda

Well, why not?

I would say he’s one of the most glamorous film presences currently working in cinema.

You never quite know what you’re gonna get in any second with him. It’s really, truly just an honor to be his colleague.

Ji-young

Now, you played a father-and-daughter role with Miss Ko,

Caption

Kang-ho and Ah-seong played father and daughter in ‘The Host’ (2006)

Ji-young

is this the first time you’ve seen each other since then?

Kang-ho

You know, even back then I thought  she was a brilliant actress.

Caption

Ah-seong was brilliant in ‘The Host’

Kang-ho

Hadn’t you just started middle school?

Ah-seong

That’s right.

Caption

Weren’t you a 1st year at middle school?

Kang-ho

She was only a first year in middle , so to see her perform like that  astonishing.

Caption

It was astonishing to see such a performance from such a young actress

Kang-ho

Joon-ho feels the same way I do, that  there’s something special about her as an actress.

Ji-young

What do think it would be like for the two of you to play opposite each other as two adults?

Caption

How would it be for the two of you to play adult roles together?

Kang-ho

I don’t think that’s ever likely to happen.

Caption

 It’s never going to happen

Caption

 Haha!

Ji-young

But why do you always stick to father- daughter roles?

Ah-seong

This is our second one now, and I can’t really imagine any other dynamic between us.

Which of Director Bong’s works have you found most impressive?

Tilda

Honestly, I think that every film he makes is a masterpiece, and, eh... let’s say “the next one”!

Chris

It’s so funny, even after I signed on,  there were a number of directors that I know,            phenomenal directors that I’ve worked , from Edgar Wright and Quentin Tarantino,

said, “Are you working with Director Bong?

Oh, God! I love him!”

Ji-young

That’s the director of “Kill Bill”, right?

Caption

Quentin Tarantino as in the director of “Kill Bill”?

Voice

You’re working with Director Bong?

Chris, you’re a lucky man!

Joon-ho

Yes, it seems that’s what he said.

Ji-young

How does that make you feel?

Caption

How do you feel?

I still have a long way to go...

Joon-ho

I think I still have a long way to go.

I’ve only made five films so far, so there’s a lot more to come.

Kang-ho

Director Bong has shot a lot of masterpieces like ‘Memories of Murder’,

 ‘The Host’ and ‘Mother’.
