Ten Billion Blockbuster “The Flu” Pushes Back Release Date

“The Flu,” one of the Korean blockbusters coming this summer, has postponed its release date. According to the film industry, “The Flu” aimed to meet the initial release date of June 27, but decided to push back the date to July or August to allow more time for the post-production stage.
A source said that the crew is speeding up the post-production process, but plans to postpone the release date to ensure higher quality of the movie. The final release date will be determined once the post-production comes to an end.
“The Flu” attracted a lot of attention from the beginning because it will mark the comeback for Kim Seong-soo, the director of “Beat,” “City of the Rising Sun,” and “Musa.” When a fatal, mutated form of virus that kills all infected people within 36 hours, spreads beyond control, authorities decide to close off Bundang, the area that is hit the hardest. The movie looks at the struggle of the people locked inside this affluent neighborhood, different relationships including familial love, and the ties between the USA and Korea. It stars Jang Hyuk and Soo Ae.
The movie’s distributor and investor CJ E&M has long hoped to dominate the summer theaters with “The Flu” and worked to meet the release date of June 27. Even the film industry adjusted the release dates of other Korean movies so that they would not be up against a KRW 10 billion blockbuster.
However, now that “The Flu” is looking at a later release date, a competition among Korean movies has become unavoidable this summer. “The Flu” will more likely come to theaters in late July or early August because the last scene will be re-filmed and post-production is taking longer than expected.
CJ E&M will have to adjust the release date of “The Flu” because early August is the release date of CJ E&M’s KRW 45 billion project, Bong Joon-ho’s “Snowpiercer.” If “The Flu” picks up its speed and comes to theaters in late July, then it can compete against Showbox’s “Mister Go” instead.
