Korean Version of “King’s Man” Would Be “Intimate Enemies”

A movie about losers, “Intimate Enemies” has cast off its veil. Director Lim Sang-soo, well-known for portraying the dark and heavy side of the Korean society, returns to the screen with a lighthearted, entertaining movie. The uncanny synergy of Ryu Seung-beom and Go Jun-hee managed to pull off a very intriguing story.  Ryu stars as the intern Ji-noo who has no girlfriend and no power at work. He sleeps in a tiny room, but countless women have passed in and out of the room, and he has a college degree. But now, he is just an intern chasing after a wealthy boss’s employee who is fleeing with a money bag. What is the definition of a loser? Without any connection or a full-time job, only a debt of thousands of dollars, Ji-noo fits right into the definition of “a loser.”

Go Jun-hee appears as Na-mi. She lives alone and drives a tow truck. She takes off her dirty clothes and gets in the bath to earn 100 dollars, but she gets dressed again and runs out barefoot. Her house is in the middle of being pulled down, but for some reason, the redevelopment project has come to a halt. Her relationships with men end as a one-night stand. It’s been a long time since both of her parents left for the other world. But Na-mi is a hardworking, cheerful loser.

The car carrying the money bag gets into a crash. Na-mi comes to the scene to tow away the car. Na-mi and Ji-noo meet at the junkyard, and together with Jacob (Sam Okyere) who works at the junkyard and got his hands on the money bag first, decide to keep the money for themselves. The three losers are now up against a team of civil servants and the rich boss who attached a location tracker to the money bag. Earlier this year, the movie “Kingsman: The Secret Service” created a syndrome in Korea by tickling the loser code. In the same line, “Intimate Enemies” is a movie about Korean losers. “Uber cool” is the keyword of this movie. The ending, as expected from director Lim, will be cruel and intense with a B-rated humor.
