Berlin Film Festival Reveals 19 Competing Films: No Korean Film

The 65th Berlin International Film Festival to be held next month in Berlin, Germany, has officially invited 23 films to take part – 19 films in the competition category and four in the non-competition category. As posted on the official homepage on the 20th, the opening movie “Nobody Wants the Night” by Spanish director Isabel Coixet and 18 other films will compete for the best film award, the Golden Bear.

For two years in a row now, Korean films have failed to enter the competition. In 2013 Hong Sang-soo’s “Nobody’s Daughter Haewon” was one of the competing films but it failed to win an award. This year, the lineup includes British auteur of aesthetic films Peter Greenaway’s “Eisenstein in Guanajuato,” Patricio Guzman’s “The Pearl Button,” Werner Herzog’s “Queen of the Desert,” and Terrence Malick’s “Knight of Cups.” Japanese director Sabu’s “Chasuke’s Journey” also made the list.

The out-of-competition program will feature four films: Oliver Hirschbiegel’s “Elser,” Wim Wenders’s “Everything Will Be Fine,” Kenneth Branagh’s “Cinderella,” and Bill Condon’s “Mr. Holmes.” Wim Wenders is also the recipient of the Honorary Golden Bear.

As for Korean movies, director Yun Jae-gyun’s “International Market” has been invited to the panorama program, which introduces outstanding films that have both artistic and commercial values and the works of the most up-and-coming directors of the year. Director Na Young-gil’s graduation piece from the Korea National University of Arts “Hosanna” has been invited to the Berlinale Shorts. The jury this year will be led by Darren Aronofky, the director of “Black Swan” (2011) and “Noah” (2014).

The Berlin International Film Festival kicks off on February 5 with “Nobody Wants the Night” and closes on the 15th.
