Jeon Do-yeon, First Korean Actress to Join the Jury at Cannes

Jeon Do-yeon will be the first Korean actress to appear as a member of the jury at the 67th Cannes Film Festival. The Cannes Film Festival organizing committee announced on the official website that they have invited Jeon Do-yeon as a judge for the competition section. There will be nine judges in total with Jane Campion, the winner of the 1993 Palme D’or for “The Piano,” leading the jury.

Aside from Jeon Do-yeon, the jury includes Chinese filmmaker Jia Zhangke, American director Sophia Coppola, Iranian actress Leila Hatami, French actress Carole Bouquette, Danish director Nicholas Winding Refn, American actor Willem Dafoe, and Mexican actor Gael Garcia Bernale. It is the first time that a Korean actress will take part in the judging at the Cannes. Among Korean directors, Lee Chang-dong cut the tape as a member of the 2009 jury.

Jeon Do-yeon won the Best Actress Award at the 2007 Cannes Festival for Lee Chang-dong’s “Secret Sunshine.” The 67th Cannes Film Festival is scheduled to take place from May 14 to May 25. It will screen a number of Korean films this year as well: “The Target” starring Ryu Seung-ryong in the Midnight Screenings section, “A Hard Day” in the Directors’ Fortnight section, and “Doheeya” for Un Certain Regard.
