“Miss Granny” Remake in Japan…Talks of Remakes in Thailand and India

Following China and Vietnam, Japan will be next in line to remake the Korean movie “Miss Granny.” Sources have confirmed that the Japanese remake of “Miss Granny” started filming end of last month and aims to be released in the first half of next year. “Miss Granny” was released in Korea in January 2014 and brought in 8.65 million movie-goers. In January of this year, it was released in China with the title “20 Years Old Once Again” and reaped approximately 63.8 billion won in the Chinese box office. This is the highest box office figure among Korean-Chinese co-produced movies. Vietnamese remake titled “I Am Your Granny” is almost done with the production and will be released in December this year. The Japanese remake is a Korean-Japanese collaboration between Korea’s CJ E&M and Japan’s Nihon Television and film production and distribution firm Shochiku. It will be produced by C&I Entertainment, which has produced such hits as “Rurouni Kenshin” and “Book of Circus.”The movie will be directed by Mizuta Nobuo, a rising comedy film director who created “The Apology King” and “Maiko Haaaan!!!” Joining the cast are the young, talented Tabe Mikako who won over the audience with her performance in “Aozora no Yukue” and “Shinya Shokudo” and the award winning, highly-acclaimed veteran Baisho Mitsuko. Sources explained, “’20 Years Old Once Again’ emphasized the melodrama plot that appeals to the Chinese audience and used songs that are famous in the Chinese-speaking world. The movie was reinterpreted to suit the Chinese local culture. Japan also paid a lot of attention to localizing the film. The director was directly involved in adapting the script. Korean movies apply ingenious strategies to go global, and even famous foreign studios are paying attention to them.”“Miss Granny” is a warmhearted comedy about the shining prime time of a cranky 70-year-old granny who finds herself back in her budding twenties.
