It is nothing new to see singing idols in movies or dramas these days. Multitalented members of idol groups have long been tapped into the film and drama markets. This year, the audience will be able to see their idols in several movies that are lined up for release.
First is “Miss Granny”, which recorded 4 million admissions in 13 days since its release. It stars Jin-young of B1A4 as Ban Ji-ha, the leader of Banjiha Band and Oh Mal-sun’s (Na Mun-hee) grandson. Although he does not play a major role in the movie, he has pulled off the character convincingly, especially considering that it was his first attempt to do acting. Critics agree that Jin-young did his part to make the movie a success. He adeptly conveys a rocker’s dynamic image with subtle feelings toward Oh Du-ri (Shim Eun-kyeong) in the movie.
There is also an idol group member in “The Attorney”, which has drawn more than 11 million admissions to date and continues to rewrite the Korean box office chart. It is none other than Lim Si-wan of ZE:A. Before starring in this movie, Lim Si-wan built up a solid foundation as an actor through “The Moon Embracing the Sun”, “The Equator Man”, and “Waiting for Love”. However, because the portrayal of Jin-woo in “The Attorney” requires in-depth experience in acting, quite a few people voiced their concerns when he was announced as the cast. Based on the true story of illegal arrest in the Busan academe, “The Attorney” narrates Jin-woo’s arrest and torture. After the movie was released, however, all doubts were put to rest and Lim Si-wan was praised for the portrayal of his character. Many were particularly impressed by the scene where he meets his mother Choi Soon-ae (Kim Young-ae) and attorney Song Woo-seok (Song Kang-ho) in prison after he was tortured.
Released on January 29, “The Huntresses” stars Gain as the youngest of the three huntresses. Although the movie is not performing so well in the box office charts, many are saying that Gain’s acting is worth watching. Unlike in her previous works “Closer to Heaven” and “All My Love,” she handles both action and comical scenes with a chic charisma in her latest movie.
Many more stars are waiting to be seen in Chungmuro. BoA will appear with a cameo role in “The Law of Pleasures” to be released on February 13 and will appear again alongside Lee Jeong-jae, Shin Ha-gyun, and Lee Seong-min in the action movie “Big Match.” Sulli of f(x) has already finished filming for the movie, “Pirates.” Rumors say that she adeptly pulled off the character of Heuk-myo in this period action movie. Sulli will continue her acting career in the movie, “Fashion King” starring Joo Won. EXO’s D.O. will star in the movie “Cart” and BIGBANG’s T.O.P. who appeared in “71: Into the Fire” and “Commitment” is preparing for his next movie, “Tazza—The High Rollers” (tentative title).
