Cruel but meaningful questions persist throughout ‘Six Flying Dragons’

The new SBS drama ‘Six Flying Dragons’ throws meaningful questions to it viewers. For its 25th Anniversary since being founded, SBS especially planned the drama ‘Six Flying Dragons (Script: Kim, younghyun /Park, Sangyun, Director:Sin, Kyungsoo)’ and it is getting the attention of audiences from the very first episode. The well-structured story is developing more complexity with each episode and the characters’ inspiring actions are bringing an admiration for each character. As evidence, ‘Six Flying Dragons’ has rated in the number one spot, reaching a 15% viewership rating in only six episodes, and gained its place among Monday and Tuesday dramas.

An important element to be aware of and watch for is the plight of the common peoples’ lives during that time in history. This drama is set in the period of history during the chaotic time of the late Koryeo dynasty, and it is about the leaders who founded the Joseon dynasty. Hence, the lives of common people in the story, which were repressed and abused during the time period, shouldn’t be overlooked. The drama ‘Six Flying Dragons’ shows the pitiful life of common people versus the greed and power of wicked nobilities, leading to many meaningful questions for viewers to consider.

In the 5th episode, aired on the 19th, the nobles reached a peak of brutality and the drama clearly depicts how poor people were being persecuted. One noble, Bak Yoon (Kim, Hagyun) died, Hong, Inbang (Jeon, Nomin) attempts to flatter other nobles in a maneuver to take over Bak Yoon’s position. Hong, Inbang suggested to take a ninety percent tax from the population, with the excuse of the invasion of Japanese pirates.

Some nobilities asked Hong, Inbang how people can survive with such a high tax, and he replied, “So many emperors and nations in the land have vanished, yet people in this land never perished for several thousand years. They will pay 90 percent of their earnings, and they’ll continue to live again. Thus, just increase the tax.” Hong’s impudent attitude, who was once a high official, made viewers explode in anger and become even more immersed in the story. The writers of ‘Six Flying Dragons,’ Kim, Younghyun and Bak, Sanghyun mentioned, “This drama was created from the discussion about what it means to be a nation.” The people who suffered while being repressed and manipulated by bureaucrats will arise through six characters called “six dragons.” Then, the six dragons will throw themselves into the fate of a revolution. The theme may make viewers really reflect once again about ‘what it means to be a nation.”

‘Six Flying Dragons‘ has a message that is cruel but meaningful. It’s interesting to see what kind of world will be created by the six dragons who are dreaming of a different world, and what kind of poignant emotions will be given to the viewer through the story.
