“You who came from the stars” Had It All for Success

SBS drama “You who came from the stars” wraps up on February 27 with the final 21st episode. Since it first went on air on December 18, “My Love from the Star” has been sensational, taking the “drama king” title for Wednesday and Thursday lineup. The viewership alone reveals the immense popularity of “My Love from the Star.” It recorded 15.6% for the very first episode, followed by 18.3%, 19.4%, and 20.1% for consecutive episodes. It only took four episodes to break through the 20% barrier. Viewership increased with every episode, with the 18th episode recording the highest ever 27.4%, which is looking to be broken by the 30% mark.
The success of “You who came from the stars” was foretold from the start. It was top star Jeon Ji-hyeon’s return to the TV screen in 14 years after SBS drama “Happy Together” in 1999. She had remained active in the film industry, displaying unchanged looks and more mature acting after marriage, and carried her achievements to the TV screen. Critics agreed that only Jeon Ji-hyeon could have handled the role of Cheon Song-yi. Self-centered but impossible to hate, Cheon Song-yi was Jeon Ji-hyeon herself.
Top of Korean actors in their twenties, Kim Su-hyeon did his part in bringing the female viewers to the front of the TV with his role as alien Do Min-jun. After his highly-successful drama “The Moon that Embraces the Sun” Kim Su-hyeon proved that he is also a film material with the success of “Secretly, Greatly.” Reuniting with “The Thieves” Jeon Ji-hyeon on the set for “You who came from the stars,” Kim Su-hyeon succeeded in creating that “tingling sensation,” the most important factor in romantic comedies. The drama helped establish Kim Su-hyeon as the most sought-after actor in his twenties.
There was also the screenplay that made the top pair shine. Playwright Park Ji-eun’s previous titles include “Queen of Housewives,” “Queen of Reversals,” and “My Husband Got a Family.” The biggest hit of the “queen series” is, of course, “My Husband Got a Family,” which recorded the highest viewer rating among all programs that aired in 2012. In the latest drama “You who came from the stars,” Park achieved another writing feat by bringing out the forte of Jeon Ji-hyeon and Kim Su-hyeon in an intriguing story about the love between an alien and human.
