MBC drama "Horse Doctor" (director Lee Byeong-hoon, Choi Jeong-kyu) is gathering a loyal following of viewers. The drama sketches the life of the horse doctor Baek Gwang-hyeon, played by Cho Seung-woo, who goes on to become a doctor for the king in the Joseon Dynasty. It will be interesting to see whether "Horse Doctor" can follow the footsteps of Lee Byeong-hoon’s previous work, the K-drama phenomenon "Jewel in the Palace."
However, "Horse Doctor" is being compared to another Lee Byeong-hoon hit drama "Heo Jun." The two dramas share the same medical theme. "Heo Jun" is based on a true story of a Joseon doctor Heo Jun, which recorded a 63.5% viewership rating at its best. What, then, are the similarities between the two dramas? First, both employ a heroic tale of a protagonist who overcomes adversaries and trials to triumphed in the end. The viewers follow the development of the main character and become engrossed in the story.
Another similarity can be found in the supporting characters that help out the protagonist. It's interesting to note that some supporting actors and actresses of "Horse Doctor" previously starred in "Heo Jun.“
“Horse Doctor" is heading fast toward the 20% viewership rating mark. The viewers are keenly waiting to see how the story will unfold and whether the drama will surpass the achievements of "Heo Jun."
