“SM is different”... A miracle that will go smoothly for 52 weeks

SM Entertainment made a clean sweep of the charts again. “Tell Me (What Is Love),” a duet song by Yoo Young-jin and EXO D.O., topped eight Korean music charts as soon as it was released on the 19th at midnight through STATION, a digital music channel where SM will release a new single once per week for 52 weeks.

Followed by “Rain,” the first song released through STATION, this duet song reached the top spot on all major charts. When this K-pop powerhouse announced its STATION project, people were in doubt. This STATION project through which SM will release a new digital single once per week at a fixed time for 52 weeks may appear to be a hasty decision, and many people were uncertain if it could attract much attention from the public as SM Town had shown a tendency to be stronger in albums rather than in singles despite of its reputation as the nation’s most successful entertainment company. However, the concerns were proven to be groundless when STATION’s first runner, Taeyeon, released her song titled “Rain.” It immediately climbed to the top of Korea’s eight major music charts as soon as it was released on February 3 and has remained in the upper ranks including the fifth place of Melon’s real-time chart as of the 19th 16 days after its release.

With the second runner, Yoo Young-jin and D.O.’s “Tell Me (What Is Love),” which ranked first in the charts immediately after it was released, SM Entertainment is turning its aspiration into a reality; it said half-in-jest and half-in-earnest that it would get its 52 new songs for 52 weeks straight ranked in major music charts.

Given that only two runners have been released so far for the STATION project, this promising prospect may be hasty. However, the bold determination and unconventional move to give it a try that the nation’s biggest powerhouse for the K-pop industry have shown with two rounds of the project appear to be clearly demonstrating why SM is different from the others.

For starters, Taeyeon, who just wrapped up her activities for her solo album “I” and TaeTiSeo’s mini album “Dear Santa,” started off the weekly digital releases out of people’s expectations.

The second song for the project was even more surprising in that Yoo Young-jin came back as a singer after 13 years. It showed that any artist of SM Entertainment can join STATION, which heightens people’s expectations for its next songs and artists.
