Kara Takes Triple Crown at Japan Gold Disc Awards

Kara’s success in Japan is making headlines. They grabbed three awards at the 27th Japan Gold Disc Awards for Best Asian Artist, Album of the Year (Asia category), and Best 3 Album (Asia category). Kara debuted in Japan in 2010 with the instant hit “Mister,” which was followed by nationwide hits such as “Go Go Summer” and “Jet Coaster Love.” Even amidst the recent anti-Hallyu movement, Kara has enjoyed steady popularity and success.

At the Japan Gold Disc Awards, Kara took the coveted Best Asian Artist Award and the Album of the Year for their second album “Super Girl.” They were also selected for Best 3 Album Award (Asia category) along with Big Bang’s “Alive.”

Their awards came after their successful concert at Tokyo Dome, the dream stage for Japanese singers. They were the first Korean female artists to hold a concert at Tokyo Dome.

Kara’s friendly rivals Girls’ Generation also put their name on the list of recipients of the Gold Disc. Their “Japan First Tour Girls’ Generation” won the Best Music Video Award (Asia category) and their “Paparazzi” was selected for the Song of the Year by Download (Asia category). Following in footsteps of Kara and Girls Generation are new K-pop idols. Boy groups B1A4 and Boyfriend and Korea’s “younger sister” IU swept the Best 3 New Artists Award (Asia category) and brightened the beacon for K-pop.

Kara debuted successfully in Japan with their single “Mister,” which was ranked fifth on the Oricon Weekly Chart, and continued to make records in the Japanese market. In their first year, “Kara Best 2007-2010” album sold more than 100 thousand copies, and they became the hottest and the most successful rookie of the year. Their song was ranked first at karaoke establishments.

At the 27th Japan Gold Disc Awards, the Artist of the Year Award went to the girl group AKB48 in the domestic category and to Che’Nell in the international category,
