World star PSY (36, Park Jae-sang) is creating another global sensation with his new song “Gentleman.” Released on YouTube at 9:00 p.m. on April 13, the music video for “Gentleman” recorded 30 million views in 31 hours. As of April 15, 7:30 a.m., the music video has received 39,457,944 views. The record was set only three days after the release of the music video.
“Gentleman” did not only rewrite the record of its predecessor “Gangnam Style,” which turned PSY into a world star, but also set a new record on YouTube—the most views in the shortest time. Before “Gentleman,” the K-pop music video that held this record was “I Got a Boy” by Girls’ Generation for receiving more than 30 million views in 15 days. In the case of “Gangnam Style,” it took 33 days for it to hit the 30 million mark.
Although there were conflicting responses to “Gentleman” when it was first released, after the music video was unveiled, the song is even leaping up on all iTunes charts around the world. The song is ranked at the top of iTunes singles charts in 17 nations—Azerbaijan, Belgium, Brunei, Colombia, Czech, Finland, Greece, Hong Kong, Macao, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Slovakia, Slovenia, Thailand, UAE, and Vietnam.
It is ranked in the top 10 in 51 nations, including Switzerland, UK, Sweden, Israel, and Denmark, and in the top 100 in 72 countries. In Korea, “Gentleman” swept nine major music Web sites. It topped the real time ranking charts of Melon, Mnet, Olleh Music, Bugs, Soribada, Monkey3, Naver Music, Cyworld Music, and Daum Music. The “Gangnam Style” parody boom that became a sensation worldwide is just waiting to happen with “Gentleman.”
